ADA parking signs
What the federal rule requires
- The ISA, complying with 703.7.2.1: non-glare, contrasting.
- "Van accessible" on the signs for van spaces. The Access Board's advisory calls it informative, not restrictive: cars may park there too.
- 60 inches minimum from the ground to the bottom of the sign, so it stays visible over a parked vehicle.
- Nothing else. The ADA sets no sign size, color or wording beyond this; enforcement of parking privileges is left to state and local law.
Two exceptions (216.5): a site with a total of four or fewer parking spaces, accessible ones included, does not need to identify the accessible space; and residential parking assigned to specific dwelling units does not need signs.

Count each parking facility on a site separately (208.2). For every six accessible spaces, or fraction of six, at least one must be a van space (208.2.4), so a lot needing 1 to 6 accessible spaces needs 1 van space and a lot needing 7 needs 2. Hospital outpatient facilities need 10 percent of patient and visitor spaces to be accessible, and rehabilitation and outpatient physical therapy facilities 20 percent.
What states add
Parking signs are where state law differs most. Common additions are a minimum sign size, reflective sheeting, white-on-blue colors, a fine amount, and a tow-away notice at the lot entrance. California's rules are on the California page: white-on-blue ISA, reflectorized, at least 70 square inches, "Minimum Fine $250", 80 inches in circulation paths, and a 17 by 22 inch tow-away sign. Many shops use the MUTCD R7-8 reserved parking design as the base panel and add the state's plaques below it.
Measure the 60 inches to the bottom of the lowest plaque, not the main panel: adding a "van accessible" or fine plaque under an existing sign often drops the bottom edge below 60. Where signs stand at the head of a space next to a sidewalk, check the post does not narrow the walkway below its required clear width.
Questions
How high does a handicap parking sign have to be?
At least 60 inches from the ground to the bottom of the sign (502.6), so a parked vehicle does not block it. Some states require more; California requires 80 inches to the bottom where the sign stands in a circulation path.

How many accessible parking spaces are required?
It depends on the size of each parking facility: 1 space for 1 to 25, 2 for 26 to 50, rising to 9 for 401 to 500, 2 percent for 501 to 1,000, and 20 plus 1 per 100 over 1,000 (Table 208.2). At least one in every six accessible spaces must be van accessible.
Does every accessible space need a sign?
Yes, except where a site has four or fewer parking spaces in total, or in residential facilities where spaces are assigned to specific dwelling units (216.5).
